What if your favourite shopping store was a jumbled place with piled up apparel? Leave aside shopping; you never want to visit it again.

Likewise a well-equipped wardrobe in your bedroom is sure to please your eyes at each glance else it will spell a nightmare to have it.

A Wardrobe & Its Function

A wardrobe is a wall-fitted or standalone wooden structure that stores a person’s essential clothing, footwear and accessories.

  • Usually a wardrobe features sections with hanging rails and hooks to hang clothes.
  • Drawers for the valuables and delicate stuff.
  • Racks to place shoes and other small boxed items.
  • Wardrobe size should be according to your requirement. Do not get a wardrobe that is smaller or larger than you need.
  • Get the sections constructed according to type of clothing you own, i.e. If you are a formal guy or a businessman more vertical hanging area is needed for suit jackets, shirts and trousers. For a school/college student a wardrobe will have more casual clothing – T-shirts, denims, casual jackets; He may have more shelves to place clothes.
  • Always have your wardrobe more vertically designed than across to optimize space.
  • Logically, shoes should always go onto the lowest and side most part of the wardrobe because they are worn in feet. However, you can opt as you wish.

Wardrobe must find space in your bedroom where you start your day. It should not be located in your passage.

A Cluttered Wardrobe

  • Appears like a piled up trash. Looks awful and occupies more room than an organized one.
  • Can further increase maintenance time and cost.
  • May result in neglect of useful clothing articles. You can’t find staple pieces at once and may have to choose less appropriate clothes in hurry.
  • Sends bad message about owner’s personality.

Rewards of Having An Arrayed Wardrobe

An arranged wardrobe is a sight to look at. One can not imagine the relief and satisfaction of keeping a wardrobe uncluttered and clean all the times. Although it consumes few minutes daily but offers comfort and is more delightful.

  • It looks elegant and compliments the owner. Every time you sweep your eyes across a systematic wardrobe you get to see clothes organized in rows- glittering shoes smiling on racks- accessories ready to be picked up anytime. What can be more satisfying than this.
  • Saves time. You never have to waste time searching for any article. Whole view comes at a glance. Spaced out items feel proud and sing the compliments for you.
  • Maximizes space. Both space is saved and best utilized this way, you always know where next element could be placed.
  • You know where to find your clothing essentials. Our mind learns organized things faster. Once each article has a specific position in your mind you will directly access the same item without thinking twice.
  • Zero time maintenance e.g. cleaning. Each shelf can be cleaned faster without interfering the next. In a packed wardrobe you might spill other clothes while cleaning the shelves.
  • Easily manageable. Articles can be rearranged when required. One empty shelf can be dedicated to a new item.
  • Apparel can be categorized to meet the occasion. Benefit of having an organized wardrobe is the easy classification of clothing. Coats with coats, trousers with trousers. Ties hung on a separate rail. Socks in a separate drawer. Hankies and pocket squares arranged tactfully. That’s what you want.
  • Easy to update/rebuild.

Implements used in wardrobe- coat hangers, hooks, cascaded hangers, storage baskets and portable drawer, cap and belt organizers, multi-purpose hanging organizers, shoe racks, shoe slots, caddies, hampers, wicker baskets,  etc.

How To Arrange Clothing  In a Wardrobe

Organizing garments in a wardrobe is a skill, you learn to segregate clothes as you go. Mixing all the garments together and placing them anywhere in the closet can create a mess. Make yourself familiar with the wardrobe organizing tools that will ease your task.

Hang– Suit jackets, sport coats, vests, shirts, pants, ties, scarfs, belts

  • Some clothing require special care, you might crush a suit jacket or wrinkle a shirt by folding it. To maintain proper shape of these articles use hangers.
  • Use wide steel rails to hang ties scarfs
  • There are clip hangers which hold the clothing in places.
  • Cascaded hangers can be used to arrange trousers in one place

Don’t hook following clothing– An overcoat, a suit jacket or sport jacket, vests, shirts and dress pants.

Hook scarfs and belts. A separate metal bar can be used to hang ties without deforming them. Use hook organizers for belts and caps.

Box sectioned transparent boxes/ or portable drawers have a special utility. Use them to store your undergarments, pocket squares, hankies, and socks. Use wicker baskets to impart natural feel to your wardrobe.

Fold/stack– Always fold T shirts, jeans or denims, sweaters and stack them in separate divisions of wardrobe. Stack caps and hats in metal mesh baskets.

Woollens Winter wear should be stored in a completely separate compartment and should be exposed to the fresh air and dry cleaned when needed.

Sweaters and cardigans can be folded and stacked to optimize space.

In line– Shoes, slip-ons, shades, watches, wallets, perfumes

How To Conclude Wardrobe Size & design?

  • A teenager will require a relatively small wardrobe.
  • A recent graduate who has joined a new job will require somewhat bigger space. Since he is transiting in a real world he would like to bring in more formal outfits- suit or sport jackets, more dress pants, neck-ties or dress shoes.
  • A married couple would like to have roomier wardrobe.
  • A person living in predominantly cold weather will need more of woolen wear, sport jackets, overcoats and scarves.
  • On the other hand someone living in hot conditions will have more cotton shirts ,shorts, T-shirts and trousers.

A closet is a place where your day starts. Make it awesome!

Determine a Wardrobe Size

Wardrobe is no-doubt a geometrical shape, it is made up of area and volume. For instance, dimensions of 6ft x 5ft x 1.5ft gives you 45 ft3 of volume including your wardrobe shape. If you are not using all the space it goes wasted. Instead choose more practical size to cut space and achieve a clean look of bedroom.

What Should I do For That?

A more decent and productive wardrobe could be a 8ft High x 4ft wide x 1ft deep space. It offers a 32 ft3 of slimmer design and more space around. Just an example, take your own dimensions.

Customize Your Wardrobe Design

A wardrobe stores our belongings, clothing etc. Placing a new item or discarding an old one either occupies or frees the space; therefore a flexible wardrobe is a must. Maybe your first baby will ask for a little space in your bedroom.

If you are planning to buy a new wardrobe sketch your favourite design on paper and create different versions until you are satisfied.

  • List articles that will need dedicated sections, e.g. suit jacket, denim, shoes, scarfs.
  • Have as minimum shelves as needed.
  • Use adjustable planes to rearrange when required. Every new plane, drawer or box will occupy a small volume. Be wise not to overcrowd the shelves.
  • Install adaptable wardrobe- A wardrobe that has removable shelves and sections that can be reshuffled in no time is a great option.
  • Keep footwear at the bottom to achieve an aesthetic look.
  • Your closet should be bright and light up when you open it. If your room lacks natural illumination install light for best visibility.
  • Have a light colour interior of the wardrobe so that it reflects light. Usually white, light blue, light grey, light yellow colours are suitable for interior.

Maximize Your Closet Space

Turn Out Your Closet

Plan A

Come up with innovative designs. User your body as a guide

  • Garments worn on top, such as suit jackets, shirts, ties should take up space on top shelves horizontal to your eyes.
  • Dress pants and denim could occupy space just below.
  • Keep the shoes at the bottom.
  • Possibly you would want to see them arranged this way.

You are shaping a great walk-in closet that is ready to serve you anytime

Likewise the accessories- Reserve an adjacent section with narrow vertical divisions for accessories

  • Start with caps, sunglasses on top.
  • Place boutonniere, perfumes and pocket squares below.
  • Third from top should come belts and watches.
  • Pair of socks at the bottom.

This approach suggests clothing and accessories sections next to each other so that you can pick each item in order from top to down.

Plan B

Follow the order for a more structured closet. Split clothing

By Season

Categories clothing into winter-spring-summer-autumn.

If you are in a region where winter and summer occupy most of a year’s time then go with two halves of a wardrobe. Let the current season apparel stay within sight (at eye level) and shift out-of-season clothing to higher shelves to keep it clear.

By Type

The philosophy here is that once you have divided clothing by season next you want to pick clothes by type- where my shirts or trousers are- if all is arranged by type you can instantly make a choice.

By Colour

Hang or stack like colours together in sequence. Scientifically it’s hard to identify exact colour instantly out of a jumble. With a colour scheme you can easily identify one article. Moreover, such wardrobe looks systematic.

By Size

Often a very expensive and striking outfit gets lost in the wardrobe. Order apparel in increasing size from smaller in the front to bigger in the last so that every item of your wardrobe is within sight.

The more and timely you organize a wardrobe the more dynamic you become!
