Power posing is an art to appear confident and strike impression. You must notice pylons of a bridge upright, anchored and strong as they should be. If any of the pylon had cracks or was tilting or trembling you would not pass over that bridge for it might give way any time.
Similarly men ooze energy and enthusiasm power pose. You tell the world “I am an enterprising person; ready to take on the world. You should not necessarily take up a rigid ‘attention’ pose as a soldier but an appealing power stance.
What Is Power Posing
Power posing is an implement to stay ahead in every game, whether it is love or business. I will show you how a slouching frame of a man loses him all available opportunities in his personal, social and business life.
Have a look at these two figures. What are your thoughts? Do they look equally confident?
This is the way how you stand, walk and behave confidently and impressively while facing other person or a group of people, especially when done deliberately.
There are several positions one can adopt to carry themselves while power posing. Mastering power poses can elevate your aplomb and project you as a more all-round and driven person.
Interestingly facing a camera and interacting with someone in person is almost the same thing because when you are facing the camera you are still looking into other person’s eyes.
So if you are a diffident person you are more likely to avoid eye contact while on camera or in person.
Why Power Posing?
Almost all the successful people in this world exploit power posing and bearing to gain advantage over others. Power Poses give you extra nerve and energy to combat anxiety and lack of confidence. Further examples will clear the need of power posing.
Let us look at some Power Pose examples.
Presidents at the Campaign
Observe presidents when they are contesting for the election, they use power poses. They use open stretched hands to look welcoming – head and shoulders to gesture- make full eye contact with the public- use longer and firmer handshakes to make people trust them. They keep an overall engaging body language to win people. That’s all they need to become a president.
If a contestant were timid, reluctant and unenterprising he would never make a president.
Body Builders
Here you are not being advised to body build but to learn the confident body language.
While competing on a stage body builders use all body parts in synchronization to power pose.
Why do they power pose when they are already so muscular and confident?
Each of them is ready to take over the other contestants, although they are all in excellent shape, yet the competition is tighter and the winner will have to beat all other nearly good performers.
That’s why they use power posing more than any professional in the world.
Fashion Models
Males and females equally dominate this sphere and when they wish to outshine other candidates they need to walk the ramp to exude confidence pose and superficial body language.
That’s why any fashion model has to train really hard to do what it takes to be a supermodel.
Sports Persons
A football goalie puffs up his chest and widens his legs when his mission is ‘no goal’. He is doing this despite being alone against the opposite team but he is forced to prove his mettle. For its now or never!
That means men have to perform at the peak of their potential to outclass the rivals.
Superheroes
Who does not know Super-man, he-man and Spider-Man. what do they have in common a power posing and confident stance, once that attracts you and inspires you to become one. But you not at all need to be one of them but always endeavor and train yourself to perform like them.
How to Power Pose | How to Maximize one’s Bearing
All men are already equipped with the right tools to capitalize on any chance. All they need is the authentic knowledge and thorough practice with those implements.
Eye Contact
Eye contact is always as important in every situation. Generally a less confident person would look away or look downwards or break eye contact over an interaction with someone. Confidence is the key in power posing but if fail to maintain eye contact it will be ineffective. Women are shyer than men and look away or break eye contact frequently while interacting with a stranger man but a man should at least hold the manhood for few seconds.
Although, it is recommended as a rule, that everyone should break eye contact regularly during an encounter else one might come off as domineeringly rude. An erect posture with sufficient eye contact is a must to initiate impression. Always look into the eyes [at least 2-3 seconds] of a person while beginning a conversation or a friendship.
Smile
If you don’t smile well your game is over man! Crack up! Cheer up! It’s free. It’s powerful. It’s infectious. A slight crack of lips is enough to compensate all mistakes [no too much] whether verbal or non-verbal or behavioural.
Radiate your zeal and positivity via a free of cost smile. A smile is even beneficial for your overall health.
A pleasing bearing with a winning smile is a sure-fire blend to breeze through any signal of life.
Body Posture
Notice when body posture is mentioned; it is the full body stance including head, shoulders and chest, hands, spine, and legs. When all these body parts correctly coordinate you get a fit and attractive body posture.
Head
A person can adopt following head positions. Level head, head tilted sideways, back or downwards.
- While walking or standing keep your head level and up to show spirit and grit; not too high like a snob; not down like a defeated or depressed candidate.
- Don’t tilt your head when standing still. Tilted head looks awkward and generally considered a sign of being servile and lack of energy and spirit.
- A down head is very risky position against your impression. Never keep your head down like a person who cannot face the world.
Hands
If you have seen body-builders performing in a contest; they often use hands to power pose and they are best at it. Fashion models walk with nicely swinging or precisely positioned hands.
More common and frequent hand positions men take
- Crossing arms across chest
- Hands in pockets
Hand positions in standing mode. You cannot walk normally in any of these positions unless your hands are open.
Hands in Front- Standing Mode
Crossing arms across chest
You are closed and not allowing anyone to come and talk. You are aloof or stuck-up.
Do this- Open your hands, look accessible, show your interest in people. Hold a glass of water in your hands if you tend to do so at social gatherings. However, there are other occurrences when crossed hands with a smile and widened legs positions show an altogether different personality.
Hand clenched in front below belly
You may do this- when your boss or father is scolding you. Having made a mistake you are facing somebody or probably you are submissive.
Do this in stead– relax, inhale and do some shrugs.
Closing one hand over the other
This is a positive action. One hand over other is a gentleman’s way of standing with one’s hands. President’s body guards, top brass and religious elite people stand this way.
Hands on both sides of waist
- You may sound authoritative or bossy if you push your chest out and head up.
- This is a strong pose if done tactfully, displaying confidence and alertness.
- Disengage hands from this position within short time. Naturally you cannot stay in this position for very long.
Hands clasped behind you
- It shows lack of confidence or you are hiding something behind. do not adopt this position without a reason.
- This position is adopted by soldiers, guards while listening to the orders when that is deliberate but unconsciously doing that is an irrelevant bearing.
- While you are observing a beautiful scene
Hands joined behind your head
Don’t do it at workplaces, interviews, or in front of women. This is a completely chill-yourself posture while reclining on the beach in a chair or bed or situations like this.
Legs
Legs control half of your bearing. In upper body we have many parts to collaborate to bring out the effect, but here only legs. We won’t study slim or muscular legs but their position relative to each other and upper body.
Standing
Legs crossing and tightly close together are two weak postures in standing mode. Men should know that doing it without any specific reason is wrong. It is ok to cross legs for few minutes while leaning against a surface or pole. Any position too long is awkward.
- Place feet firmly on the ground.
- Ensure enough gap between legs.
Walking
While moving or walking a man can have
- Hands open [best position]
- Hands inside pockets of trousers.
- One hand in pocket while other beside you.
- Male fashion models walk in three modes, hands swaying [most natural] or one or both hands in pockets.
- Walk naturally and firmly with your legs decently apart.
- Your toes should point slightly outwards not inwards.
- Don’t move your torso much while walking
- Turn gently with your head first.
Some more points
- Stand naturally hands slight apart from torso.
- While approaching someone, neither throw hands as a marching soldier nor fix close to body. Both actions are wrong.
- Coordinate hands relative to your body and speed of walking.
- Don’t hold hands in the pockets for long while moving or standing. One hand in pocket, the other swaying is better, but not for long. Master swaying hands rhythmically.
Overall Stance or Complete Body Posture
Here we study relative position and movement of all body parts simultaneously. I will explain it through examples to make it effective and easy to take in.
- Eye contact is vital
- Wide legs, pushed chest plus a wide smile can be spoiled by a head tilt.
- A level head, bright face plus a smile will be ineffective with closed or crossed legs.
- You are sure to be rejected at an interview or date night for any eye contact error.
Smile with open lips. Achieve a perfect smile by practice. - Remember your bearing is sometimes more significant than your outfit and shoes.
- Any good factor will enhance your performance. Any bad factor will spoil your show.
